Four people died and another was injured late Sunday night in a traffic crash when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into their car in southwest Harris County, officials said.
The wreck happened about 10 p.m. at 8400 Synott near Beechnut, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said Million Zeghergis was driving a 2009 Dodge van eastbound on Beechnut when he ran a red light and slammed into a 2002 Honda Civic that was traveling northbound on Synott.
The driver of the Honda, Devendraprasad Patel, as well as three backseat passengers, Kokila Patel, Ansuyaben Patel and Jayanthilal Bhatt, died at the scene.
They were all found at the scene “with no signs of life,” according to a release from the Harris County Sheriff’s Department.
Shanumati Bhatt, another passenger in the car, was injured and was rushed to Memorial Hermann hospital in stable condition, the news release said.
Deputies said Zeghergis showed signs of impairment and was arrested and charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter. He provided a blood and a breath specimen.
Deputies are investigating the case.
