After a mausoleum and a foundation, the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who died in Brussels on 20 August 2012 and became a national icon, is to have a memorial built in Mekele. The work will be carried out mainly by the firms Yurap Plc, Elias Power and Sami Machinery plus some small companies. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which runs the Tigray Regional State and is a member of the coalition ruling Ethiopia, will shell out $1.2 million out of public finances for monument to be built on Mount Endayesus at Mekele, the capital of Tigray. On the TPLF’s 40th anniversary on 18 February, the companies working on the monument have been asked to erect a colossal figure “40” on the site.
