As part of the preparations to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on 18 February, the government organised a trip to Mekele for TPLF veterans and EPRDF (ruling coalition) officials on 22 December. The delegation included TPLF founder member Sebhat Nega, former foreign affairs minister Seyoum Mesfin and the TPLF ideologist Abay Tsehaye travelling with 130 artistes and journalists. It had to face criticism from the region’s inhabitants that they were incapable of improving living conditions or of sanctioning corruption. Abay Woldu, president of the Tigray Regional State undertook to relay the grievances to the party’s central committee. Last May, a similar delegation had also had to face strong local criticism (ION 1379).
