Washington(DC)-Little Ethiopia-February 28 is the last day of the Black History Month or the last day of the National African American History month that started by a noted historian Carter G. Woodson and since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. It is a very significant day to the African world and their friends as it is also the eve of another important success story achieved in Ethiopia/Africa 119 years ago at the Battle of Adwa or the Pan-African Victory against Colonialism and Imperialism. This was the day the Ethiopian Emperor and Empress were preparing to cofront a foreign aggressor who came to colonize Ethiopia and subsequently scramble the rest of Africa as was planned at the ” Berlin Conference ” by 15 European Super powers in 1884. The Italian army invaded Ethiopia on March 1, 1896 and at this war, for the first time, an European super power was annihilated by an African military power that fought with spears and outdated guns.

We are commemorating the victory at the Battle of Adwa and the Black history month together with a descendant of Emperor Menelik II(PRINCE ERMIUS SAHLE SELASSIE), an African American who represents an organization that honors the African Americans veterans who fought for freedom in the American Civil War(AMBASSADOR HARI JONES) and a representative of the Mayor of the Capital City of the United States of America(MAMADOU SAMBA). In the top picture above we see the picture of the Emperor taken 1896 after the battle of Adwa was won. Menelik poses as the victorious monarch with all his insignia: with the lion’s hair crown (anfarro), the symbol of the valiant warrior, the imperial Kabba lanqa and the scepter. The lion, as regal animal, is an illusion to the verse from the Apocalypse (5,5) “Behold, victorious was the lion from the lion of Judah”. Empress Taytu Butul (c.1851–1918) was a formidable queen and empress of Ethiopia. An astute diplomat, she proved to be a key figure in thwarting Italian imperialist designs on Ethiopia. Later, she and her husband Emperor Menelik II, led a huge army to battle at Adwa, where they won one of the most important victories of any African army against European colonialist aggression
