Reda Hafez, a former commander of the Egyptian Air Force has denied accusations based on a recent wikileaks revelation of email threads belonging to the global intelligence firm Stratfor.
“The claims made by Stratfor intelligence firm about a contingency plan to bomb or sabotage the Ethiopian Dam are unfounded,â€Â former Commander of the Air Forces and current Minister of Military Production Reda Hafez told reporters. On august 31st wikileaks made public the email threads belonging to stratfor on the Nile dispute. A high level Egyptian millitary/intelligence source to stratfor was quoted explaining Egypt’s contingency plans to sabotage Ethiopian dams if necessary.
“The website didn’t mention the names of security officials who spoke about this plan,†Hafez noted. He stressed that these leaked data were meant to “drive a wedge between Egypt and Ethiopia.â€
“There are some countries that do not like to see a thaw in Egyptian-Ethiopian relations. They don’t want to see a diplomatic settlement of the Ethiopian dams issue,†he warned. Also Hafez blamed tensions between the two countries on former Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi who died in mid august this year.
“Zenawi was part of the problem. He always talked about the possibility of wars with Egypt because of Nile water,†he said. Ethiopia’s former prime minister Meles Zenawi in an interview with reporters back in 2010 accused Egypt of trying to destabilize Ethiopia and threatened for severe consequences if Egypt tried to invade Ethiopia.
