Shale gas: Pretoria’s leap into the unknown
With South Africa energy needs constantly on the rise and reserves of conventional gas plunging, oil companies saw a moratorium on exploration for shale gas lifted last month in spite of lobbying from farmers (AgriSA) and the management of nature reserves. South Africa is about to start prospecting for unconventional gas in the 600,000 sq.km. Karoo basin which houses potentially the largest reserves on the continent – no less than 486 TCF.
