December 8, 2012 (SCHAUMBERG, Ill.) (WLS) – A high school student in Schaumberg was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning.

A runner at Schaumberg High School, 18-year-old Mikias Tibebu’s body was found early Saturday morning in the roadway at Schaumburg Road at Branchwood Drive.

Initially, police were not sure how the teenager had been killed, but he Medical Examiner now confirms that Tibebu’s injuries are consistent with being hit by a car. They are now hoping that someone can lead them to the runaway driver.

“Please, please, whoever saw this please come forward,” said family friend Befekadu Retta.

Family, friends and Schaumburg police are still trying to determine how 18-year-old Mikias Tibebu came to be killed in an apparent hit-and-run while walking home Friday night.

“He was with some friends earlier in the evening,” said Schaumberg Police Sargent John Nebl. “We are speaking with them trying to put a timeline together, but we have no witnesses as to how and where he got hurt.”

According to police, Tibebu was found lying in the street close to 1 a.m. Friday and unfortunately they have no witnesses.

“Our first officer arrived and found bystanders initiating CPR, our first responder continued to try to resuscitate the young man, but he was pronounced at the scene,” Sgt. Nabl said.

A senior at Schaumburg High School, the Ethiopian born Tibebu was a star runner on the schools track and cross country teams. His teammates honored Tibebu with a short run around the track earlier Saturday.

“I’ve known him for four years,” said cross country coach Scott Lilley. “Great group of guys. We do a lot together. Numbing at first, very numbing, hard to come to cope with it.”

At Tibebu’s home Saturday, a longtime family friend spoke for the teenager’s parents.

“They are still in shock, and would like justice sooner than later and would like to know what happened to their kid,” Retta said.

Schaumberg High School will have grief counselors on hand throughout the weekend for any students who need someone to talk to.

Meanwhile, authorities are asking anyone who might have information that could lead them to the hit-and-run driver and/or vehicle to call the Schaumberg Police Department.
