20 Kids Among 27 Killed in School Shooting
Suspected shooter killed himself at scene; brother held for questioning
–                                                               Details in this morning’s horrific school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, are beginning to clarify: A man opened fire inside an elementary school where his mother worked as a kindergarten teacher, killing 20 schoolchildren and six adults. The gunman then killed himself. Another person—thought to be a female relative—was found dead at a Newtown home, bringing the total to 28, reports the Hartford Courant. Police weren’t providing details about the connection yet. More of what’s known so far:
- Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza has now been IDed as the suspected shooter; his older brother Ryan was initially named after a police official transposed the brothers’ first names. Ryan, who lives in Hoboken, NJ, was questioned by police, but authorities don’t think he played any role in the shootings, reports the AP.
- Both are sons of Sandy Hook Elementary School kindergarten teacher Nancy Lanza, who is presumed dead.
- State Police Lt. Paul Vance said the shootings happened in one area of the school. A source tells the Courant that they occurred in two rooms, one a kindergarten classroom.
- CNN reports that three weapons were found at the scene: a .223 Bushmaster, a Glock, and a Sig-Sauer. They were were registered to Nancy Lanza, reports NBC News.
- An emotional President Obama talked about the killings this afternoon.
- It’s the second worst school shooting in US history, after Virginia Tech but deadlier than Columbine.
- Adam Lanza’s father was stunned at the news.
