Veteran Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega and freelance journalist Reeyot Alemu are amongst a number of journalists, opposition politicians and other dissenting voices who have been prosecuted and imprisoned under Ethiopia’s 2009 Anti-terrorism Proclamation. Eskinder is serving an 18 year prison sentence while Reeyot is serving 5 years; each for doing no more than their job as journalists and reporting criticism of government policies. Media Legal Defence Initiative is working to get the case presented to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights which it hopes will deliver a binding decision to the Ethiopian government to free the journalists and get the law changed.
